Qualities you need to look for in Outdoor Furniture

A wooden outdoor furniture never fails to bring you closer to nature as wood is nature itself that has been harvested from its bosom.   Some of the finest interior furniture comes form wood.  But outdoor furniture is special.  It doesn’t have to be as expensive or finely crafted as what you have inside the house. In fact, a little bit of crude barbaric crafting can lend a better affinity to Mother Nature than one that has been smoothly and meticulously crafted.

Wood Attributes To Look For

But the one character that defines any furniture meant for outdoors is its ability to withstand the often cruel entropic conditions of the great outdoors.  A backyard or a porch right in the heart of the metro, typically in a townhouse, can be even more taxing to your garden furniture as it has to weather the onslaught of a polluted air.

Outdoor furniture should be constructed with materials and joinery along the lines of strength, durability and resilience that should be enough to withstand the elements like the sun and the wind.  Wood furniture like pine, cedar and teak have these qualities.  While they are not meant to be used often like you would a bed, dining table or sofa, they get exposed a lot to a lot more wear from the natural elements.  So the stronger the wood is, the better.

Constant exposure to the extremes of temperatures in the summer and winter months can be taxing to them as well. If you live in the Mediterranean or in countries with a homogenous clime throughout the year, this is often not a problem.  If you live in the tropics, you have humidity and rainfall to contend with and your garden furniture should be treated to withstand these.  Some woods have excellent quality for defying extremes of heat and cold which tend to shrink, warp or expand the wood.  Kiln dried woods are best in the tropics often visited by high precipitation and humidity.  But high density hardwood like teak would be good in temperate countries.

If you got the right wood furniture for your patio, deck or backyard garden, you need to regularly maintain them.  Apart from hosing them when cleaning, it’s always a good to idea to rub with linseed oils or any commercial wood cleaning solutions to preserve their wood grains and further enhance their natural strength against the elements.  If properly maintained, a well crafted and treated garden furniture can last for years and even become heirloom pieces that can be used from one generation to the next and so on.   Just remember those teak benches in English parks have been there for at least a hundred years.
