A Rocking Chair for your Outdoor Furniture

A fully reclining lounge chair is great to sit on when just idling away the time listening to your sound system or watching a movie at home.  If you could take that out on the deck or patio, wouldn’t it be great when watching the sun go down?  Yeah, but it’s heavy, huge and certainly could ruin your floor just moving out into the patio.  Why not just get a rocking chair that Grandpa or Grandpa loved to sit on when on the porch?  Great idea.

So what kind of rocking chair should you get for the great outdoors?  Just like any garden furniture, the main criterion is weather resistance.  Just about any synthetic material is weather resistant, particularly plastic.  They won’t rust, won’t develop mildews or get sun or rain damaged.  They can be discolored over time, but that’s the worst that can happen. But their lightness makes them easily susceptible to being blown away at the slightest rush of wind.  A wrought iron or metal-framed garden furniture is heavier and can be treated with paint that would make it weather-proof.  They also make a great alternative.  Some of them are made with wicker or rattan which are naturally weather-proof as well.

Many outdoor furniture also come with minimal upholstery using water resistant cloth fabric.  But they also tend to discolor over time as well a loose much of their suppleness.  Then there are the more expensive wood construction like cedar, pine and teak garden furniture.  They make an elegant statement and are treated, either with their natural oils, or emulsified and strengthened with special weather resistant finish, to make their beauty last longer in the great outdoors.

A rocking chair never fails to look good with wood.  Most rocking chairs come in colonial styles commonly used with indoor rocking chairs.  As early as the 1700s, aristocratic homeowners have been enjoying their lazy afternoons lounging on outdoor rocking chairs.  Some of the more valuable antique furniture in the market are rocking chairs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of their designs have been copied in modern rocking chairs.

A solid wood rocking chair meant for indoors can also be used outdoor if maid with the natural weather-proofing quality. Walnut is favourite indoor wood furniture.  But if made with teak wood, they can be used outdoor thanks to their natural oils that prevent mildews and fungal attacks as well as being resistant to warping and shrinkage die to its high density quality.  A line of teak garden furniture almost always includes some classic colonial rocking chair, but so do other wood furniture destined for the great outdoors, provided they are properly treated.
