Common Types of Space Saving Outdoor Furniture

Not every home is blessed with a large backyard or lawn to serve as a garden.  Some city townhouses have a small patch of green either as a patio or an indoor courtyard.  Some homes would be lucky to have a terrace or deck for a small garden.  Just as a small condominium pad or townhouse is a challenge for interior decorators to maximize living space indoors, a small garden can also pose the same challenge to a homeowner wanting to make the garden as habitable any part of the house.

The Tree Bench

If you have a tree right in the middle of your lawn or backyard, you’ve got the perfect setting for a tree bench.  There are standard sized wood or metal tree benches than can fit around most park or backyard trees such as the one pictured above. Anything larger may require custom built tree benches.

As the name suggests, this outdoor furniture is a bench circling around a tree. It offers one of the best solutions for maximizing space in small garden patches with a tree on it.  Tree seats are among the oldest form of garden furniture dating back to Victorian times when metal tree seats made from wrought or cast iron were predominant in private homes and parks.

The modern tree bench furniture, however, are now made mostly of hardwood like Keruing or teak.  They come in various design styles and are not limited to a circular form with some sporting octagonal and hexagonal seating configurations.  There are also half tree seats and benches for use with a tree that sits on your garden corner or when a full circle bench is not feasible due to natural obstructions.

The Bistro Set

For small patio or garden decks in the metro, the bistro set is often the preferred outdoor furniture especially for intimate dining or snacks.  Designed to seat two people, the bistro term for this type of furniture encompass any two-seater garden table set.  It’s basically patterned after those two-seat tables in bistros and cafes.  This is considered perfect for couples in a condo or townhouse and is often set in patios and balconies that can serve as a breakfast table for the couple.

The bistro set can be made of wood usually teak or other hardwoods in its entirely or it could come with granite or marble tops. They can be made fixed to your garden grounds or be made portable as folding tables and stackable chairs.  The most common bistro set can be outfitted with a parasol which is a common sight in sidewalk cafes.  The metal alternatives are made of wrought or cast iron which can come with elaborate Victorian or colonial designs while some of the more affordable one are often made of cast aluminum.
