Will You Need Cushions for your Outdoor Furniture?
Upholstery and cushions are almost always the first to go in any furniture that has been better days. But these are precisely the basics of any furniture that would allow us to luxuriate in the comforts of these furnishings. Take them away and you have hard wood or metal that are never kind to your body.
The same goes to outdoor furniture. Some of the longest heirloom garden furniture that can survive the rigors of weather and the elements are often bare teak garden furniture or wrought iron benches. No upholstery. But it’s not uncommon for people who want to enjoy mother nature in the privacy of their homes to bring out throw pillows and cushions to hard garden furniture seats and benches to make them more comfortable or luxurious. You can just bring out those cushions from the living room and just bring them back in after you’ve spent an afternoon under the trees. The problem is that people often end up leaving them behind on other garden sets for days on end, rain or shine, sun and wind. The next time we see them, they’re next to useless.
What to look for in Cushions for the Garden
Getting the proper protection for your cushions or pillows against the elements hinges on the fabric they are made of. You can opt for vinyl but they get brittle and crack with exposure to the elements. The best being spun acrylic. They come is just about all the colors of the rainbow with prints and design patterns of every imagination. But don’t count so much on bright colors retaining their vividness over time especially when exposed to the sun. The sun has a way of washing out colors especially reds which become more pink over time.
Outdoor foam material can also benefit from using Dacron or drain dry foam which dries complete after exposure to rain and humidity. But only if the cushion fabric isn’t as water proof as it should be.
If you have meticulously chosen the right garden furniture for your home, choosing the right cushions to make them as comfortable as lounging on your easy chair shouldn’t be a problem as there are outdoor cushions meant for the purpose. But often, simply getting the cushions indoors after using them under the sun is the best care anyone can do for cushions, weatherproof or not.
